Test the whole route with the slowest intended occupant. Include clothing, darkness and a small emergency bag. The outer cover must not seize or be blocked by expected snow, vegetation or stored items.
Inspect the route visually each month and conduct a full exit drill at least annually. Record time, difficulties and actions; a shaft that exists only on paper is not a reliable exit.
