Remoteness changes risks—it does not remove them.
Treat a remote refuge as one possible alternative, not automatically the best solution. Check travel, winter access, communications, inspection options, vandalism, wildfire, slope water and, above all, whether the site can be reached in time.
A site visit can reveal warning signs such as saturated ground, slope movement, rockfall or poor rescue access. Specialists must then determine whether the ground, structure and drainage are actually suitable.
A remote room needs regular remote and on-site checks because leaks and equipment failures may otherwise remain unnoticed. Decide who is responsible, how often checks take place and which defects make the site unsafe to use.
