Inspect from outside to inside
Start with ground falls, downpipes, light wells, doors and drainage. Inside, inspect ceiling, walls, floor, joints and penetrations. Photograph both overview and detail with a date and mark each location on the plan.

The first inspection separates obvious disqualifiers from potentially manageable improvements. It does not replace professional assessment, but creates a clear basis for questions, measurements and quotations.
Decision compass
Four questions lead from observation to a clear, safer action.
What needs to be clarified now?
Remember: Observe → assess → choose a safer option → act.

Salt deposits, flaking coatings, musty odour or mould can indicate persistent moisture. Single readings are snapshots; trends and causes matter more. Structural cracks, corrosion or deformation require qualified assessment.
Record water, drainage, gas, heating and electrical services as well as shut-offs. A room below critical pipes or next to fuel storage may be unsuitable. Determine which areas must remain accessible and how maintenance can occur without blocking escape routes.
