Lesson 06 · Prevention
Leave the ground safely
Protect. Orient. Create space. Stand up.
On the ground, both overview and mobility are limited. The main priorities are therefore to protect the head, assess the surroundings and return to your feet under control.
Decision compass
Decide safely
Four questions lead from observation to a clear, safer action.
What needs to be clarified now?
What must I notice first?
- Start in a familiar, low-risk setting and identify a clear exit or support option.
- Separate observable behaviour from assumptions about a person.
Remember: Observe → assess → choose a safer option → act.
Recognise the situation and act early
The four illustrations connect perception, positioning and a safer exit.

Protect
Lower the chin, bring the forearms close to the head and keep the body compact on its side.

Orient
Identify the danger, obstacles, additional people and the clearest escape route before moving.

Create space
Keep the legs between you and the danger to preserve distance. Do not remain tied to the other person when a route is open.

Stand up
Support yourself with one hand and move the free leg back. Keep your gaze and protection towards the danger until you can leave.
Sound decisions
- Lie on the side rather than flat
- Protect the head consistently
- Create space before standing
- Increase distance after standing
Avoid
- Jumping up blindly
- Turning your back on the danger
- Leaving both hands on the ground
- Remaining down when the route is clear
Knowledge check
Choose the option that preserves safety
You have fallen. The danger is still in front of you and there is space behind you. Which sequence is sensible?
- ATurn onto the stomach immediately and crawl away.
- BProtect, orient, maintain distance and stand up under control.
- CRaise both hands and jump straight up.
- DRemain on the ground and wait for help.
Show answer
B. This sequence preserves protection and visual contact. Once there is space, stand under control and leave the situation.
Protect your head, keep the danger in view, stand when there is space and leave.
